Electromagnetic fields surround us since the beginning of mankind: Among many others, light is an electromagnetic signal. In prinicipal, this means that these fields are not dangerous. However: Nearly all electronic devices generate electromagnetic fields and if these fields get too strong, they can bear risks for your health.
You can use this detector to measure the electromagnetic field in your environment. It displays the strength of the electromagnetic field using 4 LEDs, the measurement range goes from 1 mGauss to 10 mGauss. To get a feeling for these values, here are typical values from household devices: An hairdryer creates values of up to 7 mGauss, a TV of up to 2 mGauss and a computer should not create more than 0.01mGauss. Which values are dangerous can not be said seriously: Different scientific studies have come to completely different results so far. What can be said is that it definitely gets dangerous when the magnetic field in your home reaches values of over 100 mGauss (according to the international society for radiation protection), but there are also studies that a higher risk of blood cancer may occur for much lower values of only 2 mGauss.
To be scientifically correct, you have to say that the device measures the magnetic flux density of varying magnetic fields in the range of 50Hz (which is the most important frequency because this is the frequency used by the electric circuit in Europe). It does not measure static (which means not changing over time) magnetic or electric fields, which are for example generated by a permanent magnet. These fields do not pose threats to human health.
The measurement device is about 16cm long and needs a 9V battery which is not included.
