As a politically interested geek,
Guy Fawkes will surely mean something to you: On the 5th of November 1605, he tried to blow up the English parliament together with the reigning king, James I. As we know, this plan didn’t quite work out, thanks to an informer. Guy Fawkes was captured and executed – although that's probably what's made him infamous.
Flash forward almost four centuries to 1982 when Alan Moore wrote the comic
V for Vendetta, which was filmed in 2006. In both the comic and the movie, the hero, 'V', tries to destroy the fascist government of England, wearing a mask with the face of Guy Fawkes.
In real life, the
Guy Fawkes V for Vendetta Mask has been adopted by the hacker movement,
Anonymous, and worn for special events like the campaign against Scientology. The mask has also been used numerous other times too, for example in 2010 during the protests against the arrest of Julian Assange, the head of WikiLeaks, an in the recent Occupy Wall Street protest.
While Guy Fawkes himself failed in his mission, this V for Vendetta version of his face has become a symbol of the battle against outdated and notably unjust systems.
So if you're a bit of a revolutionist, or politically interested, or you're simply a fan of the movie, get yourself a
