It’s not exactly a secret that we’re running out of fossil fuels. One alternative, though, could be hydrogen. Using a device called an electrolyser, water, for example, can be used to form hydrogen, which is then converted to electrical energy by fuel cells.

The Fuel Cell Car is similar to our H-Racer 2.0 Hydrogen Car. It also comes as a cool ‘science kit’ – you have to ‘build’ the car yourself! But don’t worry, it’s very simple to assemble: Apart from a pair of scissors, no tools are required.

Once completed, you’ll be able to wow your geek friends because the Fuel Cell Car kit is open-planned, showing off the engine and fuel cell components. And they won’t believe you ‘built’ it yourself!

How does the car work? Well, it uses a reversible PEM fuel cell that combines electrolysis and power conversion in one single device. You can actually see oxygen and hydrogen gases being formed in two transparent water containers.
To start the electrolysis, you'll need an initial current. This is produced by connecting the included solar panel. In case the sun doesn't shine, though, you can use the included battery pack.

Once in operation, the car steers independently, using the energy gained from the fuel cell. When it hits a barrier it will automatically reverse 90 degrees, and continue on its way.

The fuel cell components are very sensitive to impurities found in water, so please make sure you use only distilled water, otherwise the usability of the Fuel Cell Car will be shortened.
