Do you remember the BigTrak? Okay, it’s been a while since this rather special toy truck was first launched – 1979, in fact. Today, the BigTrak is a geeky retro toy truck which still commands a loyal fan base. And now it’s available as a great reproduction, true in every way to the original.

What is so special about the BigTrak?
The unusual thing is the way you control it: The BigTrak is “sort of” remote controlled, though it has no remote. Confused? Instead, what you do is type in commands on a panel on the top of the truck, which then execute the moves. Today’s kids would probably prefer a computer controlled “whatever”, but the BigTrak is a real toy! And you can have hours of fun with it because it can be programmed with very flexible and detailed commands to get it to move in just the ways you want.

How does the programming work?
With the direction arrows and the numbers, you regulate the direction and the distance that the BigTrak will drive. A typical input sequence is: 5 length forward, turn 45°, 12 length backwards, pause for 2 seconds, 4 length forward, fire phaser (blue light plus sound) 6 times. 16 commands are programmable. Theoretically, the BigTrak can drive 99 lengths forward or backward (1 length is about 40 cm), fire 99 times and turn 360°. And input commands can be made very gradually: For example, the time that the BigTrak pauses can be made in steps of tenths of seconds, its turns in minutes of degrees.
The BigTrak has other adjustment possibilities too: You can let it repeat any number of steps you’ve already programmed, it has a button to check the last step, and also features a demo-button.

This toy has been produced with the utmost care and great attention to detail: Stickers decorate it, and the resulting futuristic tank optic is underlined by nice retro sounds that play while typing the commands and firing the phaser.
At more than 30 cm long, and weighing nearly 1.5 kg, the BigTrak is a big toy in every way. It comes with a very clear instruction manual, enabling you to get started easily.
