Antquarium Short info:
- In this box containing a special gel, you can set ants and watch them.
- The ant dig tunnels into the gel and noruish on it.
2003 the NASA planned a space shuttle experiment, in which they wanted to study the life of ants in zero gravity. So they needed a possibilty to get a ant colony to outer space. The solution was a special gel, in which the ants are able to dig tunnels and which can serve as food for them. Additionally, the gel was transparent so that they could observate the ants perfectly.
This gel is now available to the public: The Antquarium consists of a box made out of plexiglas, which is full of the mentioned gel. You can put some ants from the outdoor in the gel and watch them digging tunnels. The ants will survive about 1-2 months, but dead ants are carried out of the tunnels from their fellows so you can remove them easily. Again: You don't need to feed the ants, they will survive from the gel.
The Antquarium comes with:
Plexiglas-Box with Antquarium-Gel (about 17cm*14cm*3,5cm)
Small box to pick up ants
Magnifying-Glass
Stick to remove dead ants
By the way, you don't have to buy a new Antquarium when the gel is burnt up - just fill it up again with the Gel Refill.
By the way, the Antquarium has 3 LEDs in its base. You can switch them on to illuminate the tunnels, but you should do that only from time to time. Ants normally live in the dark and the light will disturb them.
